2019 poll shows fans of only five PL clubs wanted Man City to beat Liverpool to title
Pep Guardiola claimed that everyone wants Liverpool to beat Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
After Man City beat Newcastle 5-0 to move three points clear of the Reds, Guardiola conducted a remarkable interview in which he questioned the media’s bias.
“Everyone in this country supports Liverpool – the media and everyone,” he claimed.
We’re not quite sure where Guardiola has conducted his research but he seems pretty convinced.
While it’s hard to prove whether the football media really does support Liverpool, what about football fans?
Well, that very question was asked of fans from every Premier League campaign towards the end of the 2018/19 season.
At the time, Liverpool led Man City by two points with three games to play – although Guardiola’s side had a game in hand.
The title was very much up for grabs as the Reds went in search of their first ever Premier League trophy.
But who was everyone else wanting to win the league?
A study by Paddy Power asked fans of every Premier League club during that season who they wanted to win the league – Liverpool or Man City?
The results?
Well, it was proved that only five clubs were in favour of Man City winning the title over Liverpool with Burnley split down the middle.
Who fans of PL clubs in 2018/19 wanted to win title
Here’s how they voted:
Liverpool fans | Liverpool 100% – 0% Manchester City
Huddersfield Town fans | Liverpool 75% – 25% Manchester City
Fulham fans | Liverpool 73% – 27% Manchester City
Bournemouth fans | Liverpool 72% – 28% Manchester City
Wolves fans | Liverpool 72% – 28% Manchester City
West Ham fans | Liverpool 71% – 29% Manchester City
Newcastle fans | Liverpool 64% – 36% Manchester City
Crystal Palace fans | Liverpool 62% – 38% Manchester City
Leicester fans | Liverpool 60% – 40% Manchester City
Cardiff fans | Liverpool 59% – 41% Manchester City
Watford fans | Liverpool 56% – 44% Manchester City
Tottenham fans | Liverpool 53% – 47% Manchester City
Arsenal fans | Liverpool 53% – 47% Manchester City
Brighton fans | Liverpool 52% – 48% Manchester City
Burnley fans | Liverpool 50% – 50% Manchester City
Southampton fans | Liverpool 48% – 52% Manchester City
Chelsea fans | Liverpool 47% – 53% Manchester City
Manchester United fans | Liverpool 36% – 64% Manchester City
Everton fans | Liverpool 33% – 67% Manchester City
Manchester City fans | Liverpool 0% – 100% Manchester City
So, it was just Manchester City (obviously), Everton, Manchester United, Chelsea and Southampton fans who favoured a Blue Moon title win over Liverpool.
It’s pretty obvious why City, Everton, United and Chelsea wanted Guardiola’s men to triumph, while we can only assume Southampton supporters are tired of seeing their best players leave for Anfield.
Interestingly, four clubs that aren’t in the Premier League this season – Huddersfield, Fulham, Bournemouth and Cardiff were strongly supporting a Liverpool title victory.
How many top flight league titles have Liverpool won?

20
Of course, we all know what happened after the study was conducted.
Both Man City and Liverpool won their remaining matches to see the Citizens win the title by a solitary point – 98 points to 97.
Following this weekend’s results in the title race, it seems fans of Everton, Man Utd, Chelsea, Southampton and, of course, Man City will be very happy indeed.
Maybe Guardiola is on to something after all…
