Alphonso Davies retired Youri Tielemans with filthy piece of skill in Belgium vs Canada
Belgium and Canada kicked off their World Cup campaigns on Wednesday night as they clashed at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Doha.
The Belgians went into the clash as strong favourites despite enduring some shaky form prior to the World Cup.
They lost to Egypt in their most recent warm-up game and so the mood across the European nation was rather flat heading into the tournament.
It seems that mood was reflected on the pitch too, for their first half performance against Canada was far from the level expected of the Red Devils.
They were fortunate not to go behind in the game after giving away a penalty in the ninth minute of action.
Alphonso Davies stepped up and fired a tame attempt which was easily saved by the excellent Thibaut Courtois.
However, the Canadians could arguably have had two more penalties in the half had it not been for some controversial officiating.
Heading towards the half time whistle, Canada had amassed 14 shots to Belgium’s three and had dominated proceedings through.
But a late Michy Batshuayi goal snatched a lead for his team heading into the break and Belgium can count themselves lucky they get off so lightly.

The highlight of the half, though, came when Bayern star Davies sent Tielemans to the floor with one of the naughtiest pieces of skill we’ve seen so far at this World Cup.
Tielemans quite literally collapsed after Davies pulled out the skill.
