BREAKING: Frankfurt win the Europa League after Aaron Ramsey's penalty miss for Rangers

Eintracht Frankfurt have won the UEFA Europa League after beating Rangers 5-4 in a penalty shootout.

Aaron Ramsey’s lacklustre strike in the shootout proved to be incredibly costly, with the German side converting all of their penalties – and Rafael Santos Borre stylishly scoring the decisive spot kick.

It was the Colombian striker who’d equalised in normal time after Joe Aribo’s second half opener and Allan McGregor had absolutely no chance of saving his perfect effort from 12 yards.

That really is an outrageously good penalty.

Ramsey – who was subbed on by Gio van Bronckhorst solely to take one – could certainly learn a thing or two from Borre…

Frankfurt 1-1 Rangers (5-4 on penalties)

It was an incredibly cagey first half at the Ramon Sanchez Pijuan, with both teams struggling to create clear cut chances.

Allan McGregor was forced into one smart save to deny the brilliant Ansgar Knauff, the veteran proving once again that he’s still a top-quality operator at the age of 40.

After the half-time break, Frankfurt took the game by the scruff of the neck and pushed Rangers back with some slick attacking play.

But it was the Scottish outfit who broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when makeshift centre-forward Aribo capitalised on a defensive error by Tuta and calmly slotted the ball past Kevin Trapp.

As cool as you like by the former Charlton Athletic man – and a great Steven Gerrard versus Chelsea in 2013/14 impression by Tuta.

Frankfurt didn’t let the error by the young Brazilian defender get to them, though.

In the 70th minute, Borre – who was also the hero against Barcelona and West Ham – fired home from close-range to level the scores at 1-1.

The cross from Filip Kostic was marvellous and Borre simply couldn’t miss.

Neither side was able to add a second in the remaining 20 minutes of normal time, so an extra half-hour in the boiling heat of Seville was required.

But even that wasn’t enough, which was mainly due to Trapp’s dramatic late save on Ryan Kent from a few yards out.

So, the match had to be decided by a penalty shootout, where Frankfurt emerged victorious.

Congratulations to Oliver Glasner’s side – who amazingly didn’t taste defeat once in this season’s Europa League!
