Chelsea set to avoid 'absolute disaster' over £80k-a-week Stamford Bridge star

Chelsea are set to avoid an ‘absolute disaster’ after making a ‘breakthrough’ in contract negotiations with Stamford Bridge favourite Mason Mount, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The midfielder is currently in Qatar, having been named in England’s World Cup squad, but he headed to the Middle East with doubts hanging over his long-term future in west London.

What’s the latest news involving Mount?

Although Mount is set to enter the final 18 months of his £80,000-per-week contract at the turn of the year, it seems he is getting closer to penning fresh terms at Chelsea.

That is because, according to The Athletic, Blues chairman Todd Boehly and co-owner Behdad Eghbali held talks with the academy product’s representatives in the past few weeks and a positive breakthrough has been made.

The report suggests there are some details to finalise before the England international signs on the dotted line, but there is genuine hope that the negotiations will be concluded after another scheduled meeting takes place in January.

It comes after it had initially emerged that there had been a stalemate despite discussions over a new deal taking place since the summer.

Liverpool and Juventus are reportedly keeping tabs on Mount’s situation and could pounce if a new contract is not rubber-stamped.

What has Dean Jones said about Mount?

Jones believes failing to agree fresh terms and allowing Mount to walk away from Stamford Bridge would be disastrous for Chelsea.

As a result, the transfer insider feels edging closer to an agreement is positive news.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “This is a club that’s lacking identity right now and the last thing they can afford to do is lose one of the only players they’ve got that the fans actually relate to.

“It would be an absolute disaster if Mason Mount were to leave Chelsea because that shouldn’t really ever happen. They shouldn’t be in a position where that happens.

“News of a breakthrough in contract talks is really good news for everyone involved at Chelsea.”

Why would Mount’s exit be a disaster?

Graham Potter was only appointed as Chelsea’s head coach in September and the last thing he needs is Mount to walk away from the club.

Having come through the club’s youth system, he has a rapport with the fanbase and is seen as a future captain in west London.

Mount will be looking to his 32 England caps at the World Cup and impressive performances could result in a number of clubs looking to test Chelsea’s resolve.

The Blues need to resolve the issue as soon as the 23-year-old returns from Qatar if they want to ensure Mount, who has made 21 appearances this season, is not tempted away.
