Chelsea 'spoken internally' about deal for £480k-a-week star at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are unlikely to offer Cristiano Ronaldo an escape route out of Manchester United despite holding internal talks at Stamford Bridge, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Blues spent more than £250million on fresh faces during the summer window, but head coach Graham Potter will be given the opportunity to welcome further reinforcements to the capital in January.

What’s the latest news involving Ronaldo?

It is understood that Chelsea are deliberating whether to reignite their interest in Ronaldo after he has fallen out of favour under Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

The forward was axed from the Red Devils’ squad for the clash with Chelsea at the weekend after he refused to come off the bench during a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur a matter of days earlier.

Ronaldo asked to leave Manchester United during the summer, citing a wish to compete in the Champions League as a key reason, but a move away from Old Trafford failed to materialise.

It is understood that the Portuguese star’s agent, Jorge Mendes, held talks with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly over a potential switch to west London.

Mendes reportedly returned to Stamford Bridge for further discussions during the final days of the transfer window, but the Blues opted against putting an offer on the table.

What has Dean Jones said about Ronaldo?

Jones believes the sacking of head coach Thomas Tuchel last month will not have an impact on whether Ronaldo will head to Chelsea.

Although the journalist feels discussions have been held over the possibility of signing the 37-year-old behind the scenes, a move to Stamford Bridge is not expected to come to fruition.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it’s as unlikely as it was under Tuchel, to be honest.

“I think that the club have spoken internally about it ever since the idea was first mooted, but it’s never really made much sense on a football level.”

Should Chelsea sign Ronaldo in January?

There is no doubt that Ronaldo is one of the all-time greats, having picked up the Ballon d’Or five times, but Chelsea may be better off steering clear of the Portuguese star.

Although Ronaldo has claimed that he acted in ‘the heat of the moment’ by walking down the tunnel and leaving Old Trafford before Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham had even ended last week, his attitude has to be questioned.

Graham Potter, who was appointed as Chelsea’s head coach last month, may have a problem on his hands if a move was completed and did not go to plan.

While Ronaldo will enter the final six months of his £480,000-per-week contract at the turn of the year and he is potentially available on a free transfer, the Blues should look elsewhere when it comes to seeking additions to the squad.
