Cody Garbrandt Welcomes Those Who 'Doubt' Him: 'I Won't Stop Proving You Wrong'
At UFC 285 this past March, former bantamweight kingpin Cody Garbrandt returned to action for the first time since December 2021.
“No Love” entered the Las Vegas-held event preparing for perhaps a must-win outing, which came on the back of a difficult 1-5 run accumulated since he won the divisional gold back in 2016.
On the preliminary portion of the blockbuster card, Garbrandt bounced back with a composed display against the unranked Trevin Jones. The former champ outpointed “5 Star” on the judges’ scorecards following what many saw as a slow-paced affair.
Given the manner of Garbrandt’s victory, it seemingly did little to convince the masses that he’s back to his best and ready to make another run back towards title contention at 135 pounds.
But having regained his “love and passion” for the sport of mixed martial arts, Garbrandt is welcoming any and all doubt.
Garbrandt ‘Fueled’ By His Doubters
During a recent interview with Full Send MMA, Garbrandt reflected on his rebound performance at UFC 285 and looked ahead to what’s to come.
“No Love” already has his next Octagon appearance booked, with the former bantamweight kingpin set to share the cage with the in-form Mario Bautista in August. Ahead of it, Garbrandt has called on his detractors to continue doubting him.
“(I’m) just keeping the wheels polished… staying disciplined and dedicated,” Garbrandt said. “Keep doubting me. That’s something that fuels me. I love proving everybody wrong. I’ve been doing it my whole entire life. It won’t stop.”
Having found his way back to the win column for the first time since a brutal knockout of the now-retired Raphael Assunção in 2020, Garbrandt will next look to go on a winning streak for the first time since extending his then-undefeated record to 11-0 in 2016.
And should he stall the charge of Bautista this summer, perhaps the former champ will begin to convince some of a possible second reign down the line.
