Cubs Prospect Sought in Connection With Shooting Death

Police in Santiago, Dominican Republic, reportedly are searching for Cubs prospect Josefrailin Alcantara in connection with the shooting death of a 26-year-old man.

According to Nathaniel Perez Nero of Diario Libre, the incident occurred last Friday. The report indicates that the victim, Darwin Diaz Valero, owed Alcantara a sum roughly equivalent to $2,750 in U.S. dollars. Alcantara, 18, reportedly got into a dispute with Diaz inside a gray Hyundai Sonata, at which point he is alleged to have shot Valero twice.

The car is reportedly in possession of authorities, and was discovered with a nine millimeter projectile inside, as well as blood stains.

Alcantara reportedly fled after he was treated at a medical center. The report indicates his cousin, who was also present at the scene, already has been arrested.

Alcantara signed with the Cubs in January 2022 and was awarded a $500,000 signing bonus. It was the fourth-largest sum paid out among the 30 international prospects who signed for the organization last year.

Across 40 games at the Dominican Summer League level in 2022, Alcantara hit two home runs and recorded 10 RBI while recording a .136/.282/.254 slash line.
