Edgar Cháirez vs. Daniel Lacerda Rebooked Following Controversial Stoppage & No Contest At Noche UFC

Although an overall successful event, this past weekend’s Noche UFC card was shrouded in controversy.

That’s largely owing to the main event championship fight, which saw a controversial 10-8 awarded to flyweight queen Alexa Grasso in round five deny Valentina Shevchenko a second reign at 125 pounds.

But the poster pairing weren’t the only ones affected by a mistake.

During the preliminary card, featherweights Edgar Cháirez and Daniel Lacerda shared the Octagon. Their fight lasted less than four minutes, with referee Chris Tognoni intervening for the stoppage while the Mexican held onto a tight standing anaconda choke.

Lacerda’s arm had gone limp, but the official didn’t check it before calling on Cháirez to release the grip. The Brazilian immediately protested the stoppage, and the likes of Dominick Cruz and Daniel Cormier were left questioning the referee’s knowledge of grappling.

With the help of instant review, the result was officially announced as a no contest, much to the frustration of “Puro Chicali.”

Cháirez, Lacerda Run It Back On Oct. 14

In the aftermath, Cháirez’s management team, Iridium Sports Agency, revealed plans to potentially appeal the result.

But with any alteration to the official verdict seeming unlikely, the Mexican will instead have the chance to add a victory over Lacerda to his record when the pair meet once again.

As expected, Cháirez and Lacerda will immediately run it back following the premature end to their Noche UFC clash. Per Mike Heck, the pair will share the cage for a second time at the UFC Fight Night event in Las Vegas on October 14.
