Georges St-Pierre Sees Similarities Between His & Alexander Volkanovski's UFC Careers
UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre is reminded of what made him successful in the Octagon by watching Alexander Volkanovski.
Volkanovski defeated Yair RodrÃguez in the UFC 290 headliner last Saturday in Las Vegas. In what was billed as arguably Volkanovski’s toughest featherweight test, he made it look easy as he finished RodrÃguez with brutal ground-and-pound.
Volkanovski held on to his pound-for-pound No. 1 spot with the win at UFC 290 and could potentially face Islam Makhachev in a lightweight title rematch later this year.
St-Pierre, one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time, feels Volkanovski’s run of success in the Octagon is similar to the path he took during his Hall of Fame career.
Georges St-Pierre Praises Alexander Volkanovski As P4P Best
During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, St-Pierre shared what he feels makes Volkanovski the pound-for-pound best.
“He’s not a specialist,” St-Pierre said of Volkanovski. “He’s very good everywhere. Me, when I was fighting, that was my strength. I was not the best at something, but I was good everywhere. So I was able to become the perfect nemesis to my opponent. I think he’s using a similar strategy…I think he’s the best active fighter, the best pound-for-pound right now.”
St-Pierre retired from MMA following a middleweight title win over Michael Bisping at UFC 217. He’s set to return to combat sports later this year in a grappling match against a to-be-determined opponent at the upcoming UFC Fight Pass Invitational.
Volkanovski’s lone defeat in the UFC came against Makhachev at UFC 284 earlier this year. Before that, he won 22 consecutive fights across multiple promotions.
Volkanovski is still improving despite the added fame and fortune that comes with being a world-class MMA fighter. St-Pierre believes his well-rounded skillset is what makes him one of the most dangerous men on the planet.
