'He Looks Like He Weighs 240lbs' – Justin Gaethje Doubts Jorge Masvidal's Claims Of Possible BMF Title Fight Return
Justin Gaethje doesn’t think Jorge Masvidal is serious about a potential UFC return to challenge for Gaethje’s ‘BMF’ belt.
Gaethje defeated Dustin Poirier for the vacant ‘BMF title at UFC 291 in July. He likely earned the next lightweight title shot against the winner of the Islam Makhachev vs. Charles Oliveira rematch at UFC 294 next month.
Masvidal vacated the belt after announcing his retirement at UFC 287. He lost his final UFC fight by unanimous decision to Gilbert Burns.
While Masvidal is busy with his fight promotions, he recently hinted at a possible UFC comeback for a fight with Gaethje. He’s also hinted at potentially making the move to boxing if the UFC permits him to explore those avenues.
Justin Gaethje Responds To Jorge Masvidal’s ‘BMF’ Comments
During a Q+A session in Sydney, Gaethje responded to Masvidal’s recent remarks.
“Sounds fun,” Gaethje said. “But I have one goal, it’s the undisputed championship. I have plenty of time after that to fight those fights. I don’t think [Jorge Masvidal is] ever coming back. He looks like he weighs 240 pounds. I fight at 155 pounds, I’m sure he’d want to fight at 170 [pounds].”
Masvidal fought at lightweight for the beginning of his UFC tenure, earning wins against the likes of Michael Chiesa and Pat Healy. After making the full-time move to welterweight in 2015, he had some sustained success with finishes of Nate Diaz, Darren Till, and Ben Askren.
Before knocking out Poirier at UFC 291, Gaethje got back in the win column with a victory against Rafael Fiziev at UFC 286. Before that, he lost to Oliveira for the then-vacant lightweight title at UFC 274.
A Gaethje vs. Masvidal ‘BMF’ fight would likely headline a UFC pay-per-view, but Gaethje isn’t holding out hope that Masvidal will reverse his MMA retirement anytime soon.
