Jared Cannonier Makes Public Plea To Dana White For Sean Strickland's First Title Defense: "F*** The Rematch"
Former UFC middleweight title challenger Jared Cannonier wants another shot at the division’s new champion.
Sean Strickland shocked the world by defeating Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 last weekend by unanimous decision. It was arguably the biggest upset in UFC history as Strickland outclassed Adesanya on the feet from start to finish.
Cannonier flew from the U.S. to Australia to serve as the UFC 293 backup fighter. While his services weren’t required, he could potentially be next in line for Strickland’s first title defense.
UFC President Dana White seems keen on making the Strickland vs. Adesanya rematch happen next, but Cannonier feels he’s the most deserving of the opportunity.
Jared Cannonier Calls For Middleweight Title Shot Over Israel Adesanya Rematch
In a recent Instagram comment on one of White’s posts, Cannonier made his case for the next middleweight title shot.
“Hey. Dana fuck the rematch,” Cannonier commented. “I’ve already beaten your champion let do it again. Watch my break another record. I better than ever you’ll see.”
Cannonier defeated Strickland by split decision in a back-and-forth war last December. He most recently defeated Marvin Vettori by unanimous decision back in June.
Cannonier lost to Adesanya in his first career title shot at UFC 276. But, he’s defeated most of the other top middleweight title challengers, outside of losses to Adesanya and Robert Whittaker.
A No. 1 contender fight between Cannonier and du Plessis could also make sense if the UFC decides to run it back between Strickland and Adesanya. In the meantime, Cannonier is steadfast in getting a second win over the current middleweight titleholder.
