PSG 'confident' of keeping £45m star in fresh twist at Parc des Princes

Paris Saint-Germain are confident of keeping Lionel Messi in the French capital beyond next summer, according to journalist Robin Bairner.

The ex-Barcelona star has entered the final 12 months of his contract at PSG and reports emerged earlier this week that he could move to MLS at the end of the season.

According to The Athletic, Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham and managed by Phil Neville, are ‘increasingly confident’ of signing Messi, with the US outfit in talks with the forward for a few years.

The report adds that while Miami are keen on completing a deal, no further talks will take place until after the World Cup and aren’t likely to happen until early next year when Messi would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement.

Regardless, with Messi performing right at the top of his game following a testing first season in France, Bairner reckons that PSG are still desperate to keep the 35-year-old, who does have an option to extend his stay.

What did Bairner say about Messi?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “PSG still have the ambition to keep Lionel Messi at the club. He’s obviously still an enormous world star and this season he is performing how many expected him to when he initially arrived in Paris around a year ago. He has 12 goals and 13 assists, that’s 25 goal contributions.

“Everybody’s going wild about Erling Haaland, but Lionel Messi has still got as many goal contributions as Haaland this season, so he’s still a player playing incredibly well and someone PSG want to keep and are confident of being able to keep him.”

How has Messi performed this season?

Messi was uncharacteristically inconsistent during his first year in PSG, scoring just 11 times, his worst goal return for 15 years, while he laid on 15 assists in 34 appearances.

He did win the Ligue 1 title and another domestic piece of silverware in the Trophee des Champions, but it was an underwhelming first 12 months away from Barcelona.

However, Messi has started this season in blistering form and looks close to being back to his best, forming a great relationship with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

As a result, the £45m-rated Argentina international is just one goal contribution away from matching his tally from the whole of last term having registered 12 goals and 13 assists.

Messi’s form has put PSG clear at the top of the French league and into the knockout stages of the Champions League.
