Reports: All-Star RHP Sonny Gray Agrees to Deal With New Team

Former Twins pitcher Sonny Gray agreed to a deal to join the Cardinals on Monday, according to multiple reports.

The deal is reportedly worth $75 million over three years, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The expected deal first was reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

The right-handed starter joins the Cardinals’ recent pitching additions, Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson, who were acquired last week. The Cardinals are attempting to bounce back from a 71–91 season, which was the team’s worst record in a full 162-game season since 1990.

Gray is coming off one of his best MLB seasons, earning his third All-Star selection and finishing second in the American League’s Cy Young Award voting behind the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole.

The 34-year-old has spent 11 seasons in the major leagues, playing with the Athletics, Yankees, Reds and Twins. He was with Minnesota the past two seasons.

During the 2023 season, Gray started 32 times, finishing with an 8–8 record and a 2.79 ERA. He struck out 183 batters over 184 innings.

Gray started in two of Minnesota’s playoff games, going 1–1 while recording 12 strikeouts and a 4.00 ERA.
