Steven Gerrard's brutal reaction after discovering Jon Moss is retiring at end of the season

Liverpool kept the pressure on Manchester City in the Premier League title race with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side went into the game three points adrift of City and knew they needed a win to keep their quadruple dreams alive.

However, they were behind after just three minutes as Douglas Luiz slammed home after Alisson had saved his header.

But the home side’s lead lasted just three minutes as Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip combined at the other end to equalise for the visitors.

Liverpool soon started to control the game and eventually got their reward with 25 minutes of the match remaining.

Luis Diaz was sent down the left and his cross found Sadio Mane totally unmarked inside the penalty area, who made no mistake with his header.

Liverpool did all they could. Now they must wait to see if Wolves (Wednesday) or West Ham (Sunday) can do them a favour and take points from Man City.

As for Aston Villa, they gave a very good account of themselves and any suggestion that manager Steven Gerrard wouldn’t want to beat his beloved Liverpool were quickly dismissed.

Even at full time, he appeared pretty aggrieved by the refereeing performance of Jon Moss following the 2-1 defeat.

In fact, when asked about Moss’ performance Gerrard made his feelings clear without saying too much.

In an exchange with a reporter in his post-match press conference, Gerrard insisted that he hoped Moss’ performance is ‘looked at’ before saying ‘Good’ when he was told the referee was retiring at the end of the season.

In quotes carried by Birmingham Live, here’s how the exchange went:

VIDEO: Steven Gerrard on Jon Moss’ performance

Reporter: Last one from me, about the referee, you’d have heard the frustration around…

Gerrard: No comment, I just hope that it’s looked at. That’s all I’ll say. I just hope it’s looked at. I hope, I hope it’s looked at.

Reporter: Have you been to see Jon Moss?

Gerrard: No. No.

Reporter: What do you want looked at, you think he’s got decisions wrong?

Gerrard: Well you’ve just asked me a question so you obviously think it, don’t you?

Reporter: No, no, there was a reaction from the crowd that they suggested that it was a poor performance from the referee.

Gerrard: Well I’ve answered your question. I just hope Jon’s performance is looked at.

Reporter: I don’t want to get you into trouble…

Gerrard: Listen, I don’t want to get into trouble. I don’t want to be sour. We’ve lost the game. Liverpool have scored two goals against us and we need to look at that. I don’t want to cover over any cracks but, you asked me a question, and I said I hope the referee’s performance is looked at.

Then, when another reporter revealed that Moss was retiring at the end of the season, Gerrard simply smiled before saying ‘Good!’
