'Thank God For Child Abuse' — Sean Strickland Says Childhood Trauma Prepared Him For UFC 293 Title Win Over Israel Adesanya
Sean Strickland did the unthinkable, by dethroning Israel Adesanya to capture middleweight gold at UFC 293. In victory, he reflects on the long journey that brought him to this point.
Heading into UFC 293, it seemed the general consensus was that Strickland did not stand a chance against Adesanya and did not deserve the title shot he was granted. However, he would silence the doubters by dropping the then-champ, before winning the belt in a one-sided unanimous decision.
Sean Strickland Is Thankful For Trauma
Being the outspoken person he is, Sean Strickland has never been shy about his troubled upbringing and abusive childhood. This was something he was asked to reflect on after his win over Israel Adesanya, during the post-fight press conference.
However, when faced with the entire journey he took to get to this point, Strickland was far from sentimental. In a seemingly somewhat tongue-in-cheek way, the newly crowned UFC middleweight champion made it clear that he felt like that troubled childhood directly led to his success, stating that the UFC allows a home for people like himself.

“Thank God for child abuse, right? Fuck yeah. Let’s go, childhood traumas or repressed memories… You got me where I needed to be… Dad, you’re fucking awesome man. All the years of a abuse, you really… you really made me the man I had to be today,” Strickland said with a chuckle.
“I don’t fucking know, you guys. I’m just happy that this fucking world has a place for us, you know? If it wasn’t for this, man, I’m sure I would’ve fucking committed some random act of violence and fucking been locked up for killing somebody, so fucking huzzah to UFC man. Thank you for fucking saving someone’s life, including my own.”
This is an on-brand reaction from Sean Strickland, but it is interesting to see him acting humble and genuine after winning the belt. Like him or not, he is clearly one of the most unique personalities to hold a title in the UFC.
