World Cup 2022 Fantasy Football: Is there an official fantasy game for the tournament?

Fantasy Football has absolutely surged in popularity over recent years, with the Fantasy Premier League being played by millions of players across the world, but will there be a fantasy game for the 2022 World Cup?

Fantasy football, of course, gives players the chance to put together a team based on a preset budget, which is usually around £100m.

They then wait to see how those players perform, receiving points, and climbing, or falling down, the league table alongside your mates.

There is the potential to consistently transfer players in and out based on upcoming games, and there is naturally a hope that the 2022 tournament in Qatar will launch a fantasy game to go with it.

Is there a fantasy league available for the 2022 World Cup yet or are we going to have to watch every game without the crippling anxiety of seeing our captain go down clutching their hamstring?

Not yet.

We haven’t had any kind of confirmation of an official spin-off game to go alongside the 2022 World Cup.

However, as per FourFourTwo, the 2018 World Cup game launched on June 8th, which was six days before the tournament kicked off.

The first game of the 2022 tournament is Qatar’s clash with Ecuador on November 20th, so it would be reasonable to expect the fantasy league to begin around a week prior, on November 14th.

If the game follows the rules of FPL, the answer is 15.

You’ll have a starting XI, plus four substitutes, one of which must be a goalkeeper.

In 2018, again, you had the chance to spend £100m, so some wheeling and dealing was required to fit the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Harry Kane, and Neymar into your team!

How do transfers work in World Cup Fantasy?

Obviously, we aren’t yet clear on the rules as the game hasn’t officially launched.

But the World Cup is markedly different to the Premier League in that players will fall out of the game when their teams are eliminated from the competition.

As a result, you’ll likely need to transfer them out if they get beat, and bring in players who are still in the competition.

That means that the FPL rule of only having three players from one club isn’t likely to be replicated in the World Cup fantasy game.

We’ll keep you updated as and when the game is launched.
